WhatsApp Business for Local Direct Conversions

For a lot of customers, texting is the only channel they willingly use. WhatsApp is free and most trades ignore it.

TL;DR Free app, separate from your personal number, with a catalog, auto-replies and quick replies built in. Strongest in markets and communities where WhatsApp is the default messaging app. Photos of the problem are the real killer feature.

    Whether this applies to you

Be honest about your market. WhatsApp dominates in Latin America, Europe, India, Africa and much of Asia, and in many immigrant communities in the US and UK. In much of the US general market, SMS still leads.

Test it cheaply. Ask your last twenty customers whether they use WhatsApp. If a meaningful share say yes, set it up. If nobody does, put this effort into SMS instead.

    Set it up properly

Use WhatsApp Business, not the personal app. Free, on both app stores.

    • Use a separate number. A cheap second SIM or a VoIP number. Do not mix business and personal, because you will regret it at 11pm.
    • Complete the business profile: name, category, description, address, hours, website, email.
    • Match your NAP exactly to your other listings.
    • Add a profile photo that is your logo, not your face, so it reads as a business.

    The catalog

WhatsApp Business includes a product and service catalog inside the app. Almost nobody in the trades uses it.

    What to put in it

    • Each service as a separate item.
    • A photo of that work.
    • A price or range.
    • A short plain description.

Why it matters. Someone messaging you can browse what you do without leaving the chat, and you can send a specific item into a conversation instead of typing the same explanation again.

    Automation that comes free

Greeting message. Fires on first contact.

Thanks for messaging Sicc Plumbing. Send a photo of the problem and your town, and we will come back to you with a price range. For emergencies call 508-555-1234.

    Away message. Outside hours.

We are closed until 7:30am. Send your details and photos now and we will reply first thing. Emergencies: 508-555-1234.

Quick replies. Saved responses triggered by a shortcut you type. Set up your five most common: pricing, service area, availability, what to expect, how to prepare.

These three features cover most of the repetitive work and cost nothing.

    Photos are the actual advantage

This is the thing WhatsApp does better than a phone call or a form.

Asking for a photo up front changes the economics of quoting.

    • You can give a real range without a site visit.
    • You can tell immediately whether it is a job you want.
    • You can bring the right parts the first time.
    • You can rule out non-jobs in thirty seconds.

Make it the first thing you ask for. “Send me a photo and your town” is a better opening than any qualifying questionnaire.

    Click-to-WhatsApp

You can send people straight into a chat with a pre-filled message.

    The link format

    https://wa.me/15085551234?text=Hi%20Sicc%20Plumbing%2C%20I%20need%20a%20quote

Replace the number with your full international format, no plus sign or spaces. The text parameter pre-fills their first message.

Where to put it. Website contact section, Instagram bio, Google Business Profile as the website or appointment link, email signature, printed materials as a QR code.

Meta also offers Click-to-WhatsApp ads on Facebook and Instagram, which open a chat instead of sending to a website. For service businesses in WhatsApp-heavy markets these convert well, because the friction is close to zero.

    Payment links in chat

WhatsApp supports payment in some regions natively. Where it does not, send a payment link from your existing processor directly into the conversation.

Works well for deposits, call-out fees, and small fixed-price jobs. The customer is already in the thread, so there is no channel switch.

Do not push invoicing for large jobs through chat. Use a proper invoice with terms, and send the link via chat if that is where they live.

Rules that keep you out of trouble

    • Do not add people to broadcast lists without consent. WhatsApp enforces this and accounts get banned.
    • Broadcast lists only reach people who have your number saved. This surprises everyone. Plan around it.
    • Do not use it for cold outreach. It is a response channel, not a prospecting one.
    • Keep business on the business number. Personal chats in a business inbox go badly eventually.

    The 45-minute setup

    Task Time
Install WhatsApp Business on a separate number 10 min
Complete the business profile 10 min
Build the catalog with 5 services 15 min
Set greeting and away messages 5 min
Create 5 quick replies 5 min

Ask your next ten customers whether they use WhatsApp. That answer tells you in one afternoon whether this is worth an hour of your time or none of it.
