Local PPC vs Organic Local SEO Alignment | Sicc Media

Local Services Ads sit above the map pack. You can own both slots. Most businesses fight for one and ignore the other.

TL;DR LSAs are pay-per-lead and appear above everything. Organic map pack is free and compounds. Run LSAs for immediate flow while organic builds, and stop treating them as competing budgets.

What sits where on a local search

Top to bottom on a phone:

  1. Local Services Ads. Google Guaranteed badge, pay per lead.
  2. Standard search ads. Pay per click.
  3. Map pack. Three organic listings.
  4. Organic results. Blue links.

LSAs occupy the position people see first. That is the entire argument for them.

How LSAs actually differ from regular ads

Local Services Ads Google Ads (search)
You pay for A lead (call or message) A click
Screening Background check, license, insurance None
Badge Google Guaranteed or Screened None
Placement Above everything Below LSAs
Setup effort Verification takes weeks Same day
Bad leads Disputable for credit Not refundable

The verification is the moat. Background checks, license verification, and insurance confirmation take time and exclude anyone unwilling to do it. Once you are in, the pool of competitors is smaller than organic.

When LSAs are worth it

Good fit: licensed trades (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, locksmith, roofing), urgent-need services, businesses that can answer the phone fast, markets where competitors have not adopted them yet.

Poor fit: unlicensed or non-eligible categories, businesses that cannot answer calls within minutes, very low ticket services where a lead costs more than the margin.

The one requirement people underestimate. LSA ranking is heavily influenced by responsiveness. Miss calls and your position drops. If nobody answers the phone reliably, LSAs will waste money.

Dispute your bad leads

You are charged per lead, and not every lead is legitimate. Google allows disputes for wrong numbers, spam, services outside your area, and jobs you do not offer.

Do this weekly. Review the leads, dispute the junk, get credited. Businesses that never dispute overpay by a meaningful margin. It takes ten minutes.

The cannibalization question

Does running LSAs reduce your organic clicks?

Some, yes. If you occupy both the LSA slot and the map pack, some clicks that would have been free now cost money. That is a real effect.

Why it is still usually worth it:

  • Total volume rises. Two slots capture more than one.
  • Occupying both crowds out competitors. They cannot have the slot you are in.
  • LSAs deliver now. Organic delivers later. Different time horizons.

How to actually measure it. Turn LSAs off for two weeks and compare total booked jobs, not clicks. If total jobs barely move, you were paying for traffic you already had. If they drop, LSAs are producing incremental work. That test costs two weeks and settles the argument with your own data.

Bidding on competitor geography

You can target service areas where you have no organic presence.

This is the smartest use of paid local. Organic map pack ranking is heavily constrained by distance, and you cannot rank in a town twenty miles away where you have no address. Paid can put you there today.

  • Run paid in towns you serve but cannot rank in.
  • Run organic hard in the towns closest to you, where distance works for you.
  • Do not run paid against your own strong organic terms unless you are defending against a competitor bidding on your brand.

Budget split by stage

Stage LSA / paid Organic
New business, no rankings 80% 20%
Some rankings, need flow 60% 40%
Ranking well locally 30% 70%
Dominant, defending 20% 80%

Organic spend is mostly time and content, not media budget. The split is about attention as much as money.

Track them separately or you learn nothing

  • Separate tracking numbers for LSA, Google Ads, and organic. LSA reports calls natively.
  • UTM parameters on every paid link.
  • Ask every caller how they found you, and log it. This catches what analytics cannot.
  • Compare cost per booked job, not cost per lead. A channel with cheap leads that never close is expensive.

Turn LSAs off for two weeks and watch total booked jobs. That single test tells you more about your paid spend than any dashboard, and almost nobody runs it.
