Marketing for coffee shops and cafes.

A coffee shop lives on routine. The regular who comes in every morning, and the stranger deciding from a map pin whether you are open, close by and worth the detour.

How the work actually comes in

The honest version.

Two kinds of strangers find a coffee shop online. The commuter or visitor searching for coffee nearby, who picks from the map in seconds based on distance, hours, photos and rating. And the person looking for a place to sit: to work for a few hours, meet a friend, read on a Sunday. That second person wants to know about seating, wifi, outlets and whether laptops are welcome before they come.

Then there are the regulars, who are the business. They do not search for you anymore. They follow you, check whether you opened in the storm, and notice when the fall menu comes back. The stranger checking your listing already found you. Whether they come in depends on what that listing shows. Marketing a cafe is mostly about being accurate and present, for both.

By the numbers. Census County Business Patterns, 2023 counts 230 businesses classified as snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars in Plymouth County, 229 in Bristol County, 293 in Norfolk County and 487 in Rhode Island, a category that puts coffee shops alongside donut shops, ice cream parlors and juice bars, so not every one of them is your direct competition. Receipt #96D602 · COFFEE SHOPS AND CAFES

  1. 01

Hours that do not match the door

    LEAKING

Winter hours, summer hours, an early close when someone calls out, closed for a snowstorm. The coffee crowd checks hours on the map, and a wrong listing sends someone to a locked door at seven in the morning. That customer may not give you a second try.

  2. 02

No menu where people are deciding

    LEAKING

People want to know if you have oat milk, a decent pour-over, gluten-free pastry or real food before they commit. If the menu lives only on a chalkboard, a stranger choosing between you and a chain has to guess. A current menu on the profile and the site answers it.

  3. 03

Photos of the latte art, none of the room

    LEAKING

Close-ups of drinks are everywhere. What a stranger cannot see is the room: where they would sit, whether there is space to work, what it feels like at nine on a Tuesday. If you want people to stay, show them the place they would be staying in.

  4. 04

Regulars who never hear what is new

    LEAKING

The seasonal menu launches, a new pastry supplier starts, you add evening hours. Regulars find out by accident, if at all, because they follow you on one platform and you posted on another. Your best customers should be the first to know, not the last.

The leak that costs the most

You missed the call. Now what?

One missed call. Two endings.

  1. The line is out the door. The phone rings. You cannot get to it.
  2. They hit voicemail and hang up without leaving a message.
  3. They tap the next name on Google.
  4. You see the missed call. You call back. No answer.
  5. The catering order went to whoever picked up.

An example of how it plays out, not a real customer. The text-back is part of automation for coffee shops and cafes.

Timing

The year, for coffee shops and cafes.

Coffee in New England follows the weather. Iced drinks carry the summer, and shops near the beaches and tourist stretches feel a seasonal swing that inland shops do not. Fall drinks bring a lift in September. Winter mornings stay steady for regulars, but storms close roads and empty the room. Plan menu launches, and their announcements, before the weather turns rather than after.

Where I would start

Local SEO for Coffee Shops

The Google profile is the storefront for everyone who is not already a regular. Correct hours, including holiday and weather closures, a current menu, real photos of the room and recent reviews are what a stranger checks before a first visit. It is the cheapest fix a cafe can make, and the one that shows up fastest.

Questions

What coffee shops and cafes ask first.

Should I tell people they can work from my cafe?

Only if you want them to, and say it honestly. If laptops are welcome, mention the wifi, the outlets and any limits on busy weekend mornings. If you would rather keep tables turning, say that too. Clear expectations online prevent the awkward conversation at the table, and they bring in the customers who actually fit the room.

Do coffee shops need a website at all?

A simple one, yes. Your Google profile does most of the work, but a site holds the full menu, the story, catering and office orders, event nights and the hours in one place you control. It also gives you somewhere to send people who find you on Instagram. It does not need to be big to do that job.

How do I compete with the chains nearby?

Not on convenience or price. Chains win on predictability and drive-throughs. You win on the room, the people, the quality and the feeling of being known. Your marketing should show exactly those things: the barista who remembers orders, the local roaster you buy from, the space itself. Show what a chain cannot copy.
