For bakeries ยท E-commerce

Preorders and online sales for bakeries.

Most bakeries do not need a nationwide shipping store. They need the Thanksgiving pie order paid, scheduled for pickup and off the phone before the week gets frantic.

What you are paying for

E-commerce.

A store built end to end, from the name on it to the checkout.

  • The storefront, designed and built on Shopify
  • Product pages that answer the question before it is asked
  • Collection architecture, so browsing goes somewhere
  • Visual merchandising, and the photography direction to feed it
  • Mobile checkout flow, tested on an actual phone
  • Launch assets: banners, email, social, the lot

What I would build

For a bakery.

01Preorder collections that open and close

One collection per holiday, every item, size and price laid out, opened when you start taking orders and closed the moment you hit capacity. Good collection architecture means someone after pies never scrolls past the cookie trays to find them.

02Product pages that answer the allergen question

Each product page states size, servings, pickup details and the allergen wording your kitchen already uses. The questions you answer all December get answered on the page, before anyone picks up the phone.

03Photography direction for a case that changes daily

I plan the shot list so photos match what customers will actually pick up: same surface, same light, same angle across every product. Your team or a local photographer takes them, and the store looks like one bakery instead of a camera roll.

04A checkout tested on a phone, plus launch assets

Preorders get placed on phones, often from a parked car. I test the checkout on an actual phone, then make the banner, the email and the social posts that announce the preorder window opening.

The bakery version

Why it matters.

Think about the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The phone has rung all morning with pie orders scribbled on sticky notes, some unpaid, a couple for a pickup time you do not have. A Shopify preorder setup moves that whole conversation online. The customer picks the pie, the size and a pickup window, pays up front, and gets a confirmation saying exactly when to come. You print a list instead of decoding handwriting.

Be honest about what travels, though. A croissant does not survive two days in a box, and real shipping means packaging, ice packs and costs that eat a small bakery's margin. I have built stores from nothing, start to finish, and the fit here is narrow but real: holiday preorders, gift cards, cookie tins or granola that keep, and merch if regulars ask. Fresh daily items stay at the counter.

The mistake I see

Shipping fresh pastry because the store allowed it

Turning on shipping for every product because the platform has a checkbox for it. Then the first box of cream puffs arrives warm and flattened a few states away, and the bad review lands on your Google profile, not the carrier's. If an item is not built to travel, set it to pickup only and say so on the page.

How it goes

For a bakery, step by step.

→ Keep scrolling. It moves sideways.

  1. Know the shelf

What you sell, who buys it, and what they compare it against.

  2. Structure first

    Collections, categories, the path through.

  3. Look, then build

The look applied to templates rather than to one page, then products loaded and the buying flow tested end to end.

  4. Launch and watch

Watch what people actually do, and fix that.

  5. Step five is you.

Questions

What bakeries ask.

Do I need a store if I already take custom cake orders by form?

Probably not for the custom cakes. A tiered wedding cake needs a conversation, a tasting and a quote, and a cart cannot do that. The store is for standard items with set prices: holiday pies, cookie trays, gift cards. Keep the custom cake form on your website and let the store handle what sells by the dozen.

Can I sell gift cards online without a full store?

Yes. Gift cards are the simplest thing a bakery can sell online, and December is when people need one for the coworker who loves your scones. Your point of sale may already offer online gift cards, so I check that before building anything new. Running two separate gift card systems helps nobody.

What does a preorder store cost to build?

It is quoted after a call, because it depends on how many products you sell and how much already exists. A holiday preorder setup with a handful of items is a much smaller job than a full catalog with shipping. I would rather build the small version, watch how the first holiday goes, and add from there.

What comes after

Pairs well with.
