For bakeries ยท SEO & local listings
Local SEO for bakeries.
Someone nearby searches for a bakery, a cake shop or fresh bread, and the map decides who they see. What wins that map is mostly maintenance that busy bakeries skip.

What you are paying for
SEO & local listings.
Local search is mostly unglamorous maintenance done consistently: correct listings, real reviews, pages that answer the actual question.
- Google Business Profile claimed, categorized and filled properly
- Listings corrected and made consistent across the web
- A real page per service and per town you serve
- Schema markup that matches what is on the page
- A review request that fires after every job
- Search Console connected, and checked

What I would build
For a bakery.
The right primary category, secondary categories for cakes or wholesale if they apply, real hours with holiday exceptions, and menu items listed. One dropdown fixed in the right place can move more than the rest of this list.
A routine for adding current photos of the case, seasonal items and custom work, so a stranger sees what you make now. Stale photos make people wonder if the place has changed or closed.
A real page for custom cakes, one for wedding cakes or catering if you offer them, and one per town you deliver to, with schema markup that matches what is actually on the page.
The request goes out after pickup, while the cake is still on the table. Search Console is connected and checked, so you can see which searches actually bring people to your pages.
The bakery version
Why it matters.
Local search for a bakery is a phone in someone's hand, often while they are already driving. They search, see the map, glance at the photos and the hours, and go. Your Google profile does more selling in that moment than your website. If the primary category is wrong, the photos are from opening day, or it shows open on a day you are closed, you lose that customer to whoever kept their profile current.
Custom cake searches work differently. Those people are planning, and they read. A real page for custom cakes, another for wedding cakes if you do them, and listings that agree with each other give Google something specific to show. Recency counts as well: BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found about 74% of consumers only value reviews from the last three months.
The mistake I see
Leaving holiday hours to chance
Bakeries change hours more than almost any shop: closed Mondays, sold out early, special holiday schedules. When the profile says open and the door says closed, the customer leaves annoyed and sometimes says so in a review. Setting holiday hours ahead of each holiday is dull work. It is also the cheapest local SEO there is.

What is wrong, what is missing, what is costing you.
Fix the profile first
One dropdown moves more than most of the rest combined.
Build the pages
Real local content, not the same page with the town swapped.
Keep it current
The maintenance is the work. It is not a one-off.

Questions
What bakeries ask.
Should I list myself as a bakery or a cake shop on Google?
Pick the primary category that matches what most of your customers come for, then add the other as a secondary category. A shop known for custom cakes and a shop known for bread and pastry get found by different searches. I look at what your best customers search for before choosing.
Do I need to post on my Google profile?
Posts help a little. Accuracy helps more. If you have time for one thing, keep the hours, photos and menu items current. Posts are useful for holiday preorder announcements because they show up right on the profile where hungry people are deciding. Treat them as notices, not a daily chore.
I bake from a licensed home kitchen. Can I show up on the map?
It depends on how you sell. Google treats a business customers visit differently from one that only delivers, and a home bakery with porch pickup sits in between. I check what your setup allows under Google's rules before touching the profile, because a listing that breaks them can get suspended.
