Selling EV charger and generator work online.
An electrician cannot sell a panel upgrade from a product grid. What sells online is the step before the job: a paid assessment, a maintenance plan, a charger package with honest limits.

The electrical contractor version
Why it matters.
Picture the evening after someone signs for an electric car. They are on the couch pricing home chargers and wondering who would install one. If your site only offers a contact form, they mean to send it tomorrow and forget. If they can book and pay for a site assessment right there, the job has started before your office opens, and nobody else got the chance to quote.
Standby generators are the other real fit. They need regular maintenance, and owners tend to forget about it until a storm takes the power out. A maintenance plan sold online and renewing on its own keeps those customers on your schedule. Past that, the fit drops off fast. Breakers, fixtures and wire are not things a homeowner should be buying from you in a cart.
What I would build
For an electrical contractor.
A product for an EV charger or panel site visit, with a page explaining what the visit checks: panel capacity, the run to the parking spot, how permits work. Booking and payment in one step, then straight onto your calendar.
If you supply chargers, a package page listing the charger and a standard install, and saying plainly what pushes the price up: a long run, a full panel, a detached garage. A package that admits its limits earns more trust than a number that looks too good.
Maintenance plans for standby generators, sold as a subscription with a reminder before each visit. Owners buy the peace of mind before storm season, and you get visits you can slot into slower weeks.
Gift cards, built into Shopify, for a holiday lighting install or a credit toward service. Plus launch assets: a banner for the site, an email to past customers and social graphics announcing the plans and packages.
The mistake I see
Selling the charger and leaving the install to luck
Some shops list chargers cheaply to compete with online retailers, then discover that plenty of buyers have a panel that cannot take the load. The cheap sale turns into an awkward upgrade conversation and a customer who feels misled. Sell the assessment first, or sell the charger only as part of an installed package with the conditions spelled out on the page.
What you get
E-commerce.
A store built end to end, from the name on it to the checkout.
- The storefront, designed and built on Shopify
- Product pages that answer the question before it is asked

- Visual merchandising, and the photography direction to feed it
- Mobile checkout flow, tested on an actual phone
- Launch assets: banners, email, social, the lot

Questions
What electricians ask.
Should we sell EV chargers online at all?
Only as part of an install. A charger on its own is a commodity, and online retailers will beat your price. Your advantage is the installation, the permit and the confidence that the panel can handle it. Sell that combination, or sell the assessment, and let the customer buy a bare charger somewhere else if that is what they want.
Can a homeowner pay for a panel upgrade online?
Not the upgrade itself, because the scope is unknown until someone looks at the panel and, if the service has to change, coordinates with the utility. A deposit after an agreed quote can be collected online, which saves chasing checks. The quote itself still comes from you after a site visit.
Is Shopify overkill for a few products?
Sometimes. If all you need is paid booking for site visits, a calendar with payment attached may be enough, and I will say so. Shopify makes sense when you want assessments, plans, packages and gift cards in one checkout, with renewals handled and orders landing where your office already looks.
