Who I work with · Automotive

Marketing for auto detailers.

Detailing sells on the photo. A customer scrolling at night sees a salt-crusted floor mat turned new and books. Without that proof, you look like everyone else with a pressure washer.

How the work actually comes in

The honest version.

People find detailers on Instagram, on Google Maps, and through a friend whose car looked suspiciously clean. However they already found you, they go straight to the photos. They want before-and-afters of cars like theirs, clear packages with prices, and a way to book without a long back-and-forth. They are also deciding between service in their driveway and dropping the car at a shop.

Ceramic coating and paint correction buyers are different. They research hard, compare installers, read about products and ask about prep and aftercare. They want to see your process and your patience, not just a shiny final shot. Treat them like a quick wash customer and they leave for the detailer who explains.

By the numbers. The Census counts 50 businesses in Plymouth County, 32 in Bristol County, 50 in Norfolk County and 76 in Rhode Island classified as car washes (Census County Business Patterns, 2023), the category detailing falls under, and it leaves out mobile detailers who work without employees. Receipt #766D81 · AUTO DETAILERS AND CAR WASHES

  1. 01

Photos that do not prove anything

    LEAKING

A glossy hood shot in good light could be any car on any day. The photos that sell are before-and-afters of the same spot: the coffee-stained seat, the dog-hair carpet, the swirled paint under a light. Without a before, the after is just a nice car.

  2. 02

    Packages nobody understands

    LEAKING

Basic, deluxe, ultimate. Customers cannot tell what each includes or which one their car needs. They message to ask, wait for an answer, and book someone with a clearer menu. A package page that says what is included, how long it takes and who it is for removes the guessing.

  3. 03

    No-shows and last-minute cancels

    LEAKING

Mobile detailers drive to a driveway and find nobody home, or get a cancel text an hour before. Shops hold a bay all morning for a car that never arrives. Reminders, confirmations and a clear cancellation policy are the difference between a full day and a wasted one.

  4. 04

Customers who come back once a year

    LEAKING

A spring detail customer is gone until next spring, unless someone reaches out. Maintenance washes, interior refreshes and coating top-ups could keep that car coming back. Without a reminder or a membership, the customer drifts to whoever is closest the next time the car gets filthy.

The leak that costs the most

You missed the call. Now what?

One missed call. Two endings.

  1. You are mid buff on a black SUV. The phone rings. You cannot get to it.
  2. They hit voicemail and hang up without leaving a message.
  3. They tap the next name on Google.
  4. You see the missed call. You call back. No answer.
  5. The interior detail went to whoever picked up.

An example of how it plays out, not a real customer. The text-back is part of automation for auto detailers and car washes.

Timing

The year, for auto detailers and car washes.

New England detailing runs on salt and pollen. Spring brings the rush to strip winter salt off carpets and undercarriages, and pollen keeps exteriors busy. Summer is peak for coatings and pre-sale details. Fall is the time to protect paint before winter. Winter slows mobile work, but salt-stained interiors still need attention. Market each season a few weeks before it starts.

Where I would start

Websites for Auto Detailers

Detailing customers want to see the work, understand the packages and book on the spot. A site with real before-and-afters, clear packages and booking tied to your real schedule turns social browsing into appointments, and missed-call text back catches the inquiries you cannot answer with a vacuum in your hand.

Questions

What auto detailers and car washes ask first.

Should I offer mobile, shop or both?

That is an operations call as much as a marketing one. Mobile wins on convenience and suits maintenance and interiors. A shop gives you controlled light, water and weather for paint correction and coatings. If you do both, make it obvious on the site which services happen where, so nobody books a coating for their driveway in the rain.

How do I compete with the cheap guy on Facebook Marketplace?

You do not compete on price. You compete on proof, process and reliability: insured work, consistent results, real before-and-afters, booking that confirms the appointment, and reviews that mention showing up on time. Customers who want the cheapest option will find it. Your marketing is for the ones who already got burned by it.

Is ceramic coating worth marketing heavily?

If you are trained, use quality products and can explain prep and maintenance honestly, yes. Coatings are a higher-ticket service with buyers who research. Overselling them as permanent or maintenance-free backfires fast. Market them with clear expectations about what a coating does, what it does not do and how to care for it afterward.
