For plumbers ยท Voice agents

A voice agent for plumbing calls you cannot take.

Plumbers spend the day with both hands busy. A voice agent answers, says it is automated, takes down the leak or clog, and sends real emergencies to a person right away.

The plumbing company version

Why it matters.

Consider the evening call: water spraying from a cracked fitting under the kitchen sink, a frightened homeowner who does not know where the shutoff is. If nobody answers, they call someone else. A voice agent opens by saying it is an automated assistant, asks whether water is actively flowing, captures the address and gets that call to your on-call plumber immediately.

Most calls are not emergencies, and that is where the agent saves the most time. A slow drain, a running toilet, a question about tankless water heaters: it captures the details, confirms them back, texts a copy and books a routine slot. Anyone who wants a human can say so and get one.

What I would build

For a plumbing company.

01Emergency rules written by you

I define what counts as urgent: active leaks, sewage backing up, no water at all, a gas smell near a water heater. Those go straight to a human. Everything else follows your rules for booking or a callback.

02An honest opening line

The agent states it is automated in its first sentence and offers a person whenever asked. It never pretends otherwise. People calling about a flood want help, not a performance, and they deserve to know who is answering.

03Details your plumber actually needs

Name, number, address, what is leaking or clogged and whether water is still running, confirmed back and texted to the caller. The full transcript is logged against the contact for your on-call plumber.

04No price improvising

The agent reads only from your data. It will not quote a drain cleaning or guess at a water heater replacement. If you have a published diagnostic fee, it can state that, and anything else becomes a callback.

The mistake I see

Letting the agent give advice it was never given

An agent improvising instructions about valves, gas or electrical near water is a liability. It should only say what you have written and approved, like where the main shutoff usually sits, and escalate everything else to a person. Constrained agents are boring, and boring is exactly what you want here.

What you get

Voice agents.

A voice agent that answers when you are with a customer, on a ladder, or closed.

  • Answers out of hours, or when you are already on a call
  • Captures name, number, address and the problem
  • Confirms back what it heard, then texts a copy
  • Escalates emergencies to a human immediately
  • Books routine appointments where that makes sense
  • Full transcript logged against the contact
Disclosure is built in and not optional. The agent states it is automated in its opening line, and a caller can ask for a person at any point.
Price. Quoted after a call. Priced on call volume.

How it goes

For a plumbing company, step by step.

→ Keep scrolling. It moves sideways.

  1. Write the rules

What counts as an emergency, and who it goes to.

  2. Build and constrain

It reads from your data. It does not improvise prices.

  3. Test it badly on purpose

Angry, panicked, noisy, strong accent, interrupting. That is how real calls arrive.

  4. Go live out of hours first

The lowest-risk window, and where most of the value is anyway.

  5. Step five is you.

The free Receipt shows what your plumbing company should fix first. About half a minute, no card.

Questions

What plumbers ask.

Will customers know they are talking to an AI?

Yes, immediately. Disclosure is built in and not optional. The agent says it is automated in its opening line, and callers can ask for a person at any point. Plumbing customers mainly want to know someone is coming, and being upfront about the agent avoids the feeling of being tricked.

Can it tell a real emergency from a slow drain?

It asks the questions you give it: is water running right now, is sewage coming up, can you turn off the water. The answers trigger your rules. It cannot inspect anything, so when in doubt the rules should lean toward escalating to a person. That is a decision you make during setup.

Should we start with nights only?

Yes. Out of hours is the lowest-risk window and usually where calls are being lost anyway. Once you have read a few weeks of transcripts and adjusted the rules, you can extend it to cover daytime calls when you are on a job.
