For law firms ยท SEO & local listings
Local SEO for law firms.
Legal search is crowded with directories and big-budget firms. A small firm wins locally with a complete profile, specific pages and steady, careful reviews.

The law firm version
Why it matters.
Search for a probate lawyer and the first screen is a map pack, some directory listings and a few ads. Your Google Business Profile competes in that map pack, and the primary category you choose carries real weight. A firm listed only as a general law firm when it mostly does estate planning is leaving the more specific search on the table.
Then the practice-area pages have to back the profile up. A real page for estate planning, one for probate, one for closings, each answering the question someone actually typed. Add schema that matches the page, a review request that respects confidentiality, and listings that agree on your name, address and phone. That is the work, and it is maintenance, not a one-time fix.
What I would build
For a law firm.
Primary and secondary categories set to the matters you want, services filled in, hours accurate, and photos of the real office. One dropdown moves more than most of the rest combined.
Legal directories, bar listings and data aggregators corrected to the same name, address and phone. Old suite numbers and former partners' names cleaned up for good.
Real local content for each practice area, plus town pages where you actually take matters. Not the same page with only the town name swapped out.
A review request after each matter where it fits, and reply templates that thank without confirming anyone was a client. Search Console connected and checked.
The mistake I see
Answering bad reviews with the facts of the case
A one-star review from a former client feels unfair, and the urge is to explain what really happened. For a lawyer, that reply can disclose confidential information, which is a professional conduct problem and not just a bad look. The safe reply is short, neutral and confirms nothing. I write those templates before you need one.

Questions
What law firms ask.
Can we rank for practice areas in towns where we do not have an office?
You can build pages for towns you serve, and those can rank in organic results. The map pack leans heavily on where your office actually is. Do not set up virtual offices to fake a location. Google suspends those listings, and a fake office raises its own misleading-communication problem.
Are legal directories worth paying for?
Free listings are worth claiming for consistency. Paid upgrades are a case-by-case call. Search your practice area locally and see whether the directory actually shows up. If it ranks, the upgrade may earn its keep. If it does not, you are paying for a profile nobody sees.
How long before SEO brings in matters?
Profile fixes can move within weeks. New practice-area pages take longer, often a few months, to settle into rankings. I audit first so you see the whole list and the order before committing, and I start with the fixes that move fastest.
What comes after
Pairs well with.
Your website has one job plenty of firms ignore: turning a stressed stranger into a booked consultation before they call the next firm on the list.
Usually nextContent design for firms that explain things.Clients are stressed in a first meeting and forget what you said by the time they reach the parking lot.
