For gyms and fitness studios ยท Brand identity & design

Branding for gyms that people actually wear.

Your logo ends up on shirts, water bottles, the front window and every class graphic. If it only works as a big sign, it fails everywhere members actually see it.

What I would build

For a gym.

01A mark that survives a t-shirt

Primary logo plus the stacked and single-color versions, tested on dark fabric, a window decal and a tiny app icon. If it cannot be screen printed in one color, it is not finished.

02Colors that hold up under gym lighting

A palette with hex, RGB and CMYK values, chosen to look right on screens, on printed merch and on a wall under fluorescent light. Your merch printer and your sign shop work from the same numbers.

03Type for schedules and class graphics

Typefaces chosen and licensed, with sizes set for the things you produce every week: class schedules, coach spotlights, challenge announcements. Readable at a glance on a phone, which is where members check what is running tonight.

04A rule sheet coaches can follow

One page that tells a coach how to make a class graphic without inventing a new font. Files organized and handed over, yours to keep, so the next person who makes a flyer starts from the right place.

The gym version

Why it matters.

A gym brand lives on more surfaces than almost any local business. The member shirt, the whiteboard, the class schedule graphic, the app icon, the sticker on a car in the lot. Picture the logo shrunk to a phone schedule or printed in one color on a black tee. A detailed mark with a gradient turns into a smudge, and every coach starts making their own version in a free design app.

The other half is who the brand invites in. Heavy chains and skulls say something different from soft pastels and script. Neither is wrong. But a brand that only speaks to people already in shape quietly tells a nervous beginner to stay away, and that beginner may be the person paying for a full membership.

The mistake I see

Designing only for the people who already train

Gyms tend to brand for the members they have, which means intense imagery made for people already comfortable lifting. That works if you only want that crowd. If your growth depends on beginners, adults coming back after years off, or older members, the brand has to look like it has room for them. Otherwise the website does the screening for you.

How it goes

For a gym, step by step.

→ Keep scrolling. It moves sideways.

  1. Look at what exists

Your current marks, your competitors, and what your customers already associate with you.

  2. Direction, not options

Two directions, not eight. Eight is a way of making you do the deciding.

  3. Build the system

The mark, then everything that has to sit next to it.

  4. Hand it over

Organized files and a rule sheet. No hostage situation.

  5. Step five is you.

Questions

What gyms and fitness studios ask.

Do we need a rebrand or just cleaner files?

Often just cleaner files. If members recognize the logo and it prints well, keep it and build the missing versions, the palette and the rule sheet around it. A full rebrand makes sense when the mark cannot be printed in one color, looks like a different business on every surface, or signals a crowd you are trying to move away from.

Can the brand cover separate formats like yoga and strength?

Yes, and it should be one system rather than three logos. Class types work better as color or type variations inside the same palette. Members should recognize the gym first and the class second. A separate logo for each format fragments the schedule and confuses the new person trying to figure out what you offer.

Will you design our merch?

The brand work gives you the files and rules your merch printer needs, including single-color versions for screen printing. Designing a specific shirt or hoodie run is separate work, usually handled as content design once the system exists. Doing the brand first means the merch looks like it came from the same gym as the sign.
