For auto repair shops · SEO & local listings
Local SEO for auto repair shops.
When a car breaks down, the owner searches, scans the map and calls one of the first few shops with good reviews. Local SEO decides whether your shop makes that short list.

The auto repair shop version
Why it matters.
Check engine light on, a driver searches for auto repair near them. The map shows a handful of shops. They tap the ones with strong ratings and read reviews looking for words like honest, fair and explained. They check hours, photos and whether you work on their make. The shop with a complete profile, recent reviews and thoughtful replies gets the call.
Reviews are not optional here. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found 41% of consumers always read reviews when browsing local businesses. For a repair shop, where trust is the whole sale, those readers are the customers who stay for years. A review request after every job keeps the profile current.
What I would build
For an auto repair shop.
Google Business Profile claimed and categorized properly, services listed for each type of repair, real photos of the shop, techs and bays, and hours that are always accurate.
Name, address and phone corrected across directories and maps. Shops that changed names or owners often have old listings sending drivers to the wrong place or a dead number.
Brakes, diagnostics, inspections, tires, AC, plus pages for the towns you serve. Real local content, with schema markup that matches what is on each page.
Fired automatically after pickup, so reviews keep arriving without anyone asking at the counter. Search Console is connected and checked, so I know which searches bring drivers in.
The mistake I see
Wrong categories and stale hours
Shops often pick one general category and never add the specific services they do. Then they change hours for a holiday week and never update the profile. Drivers show up to a locked door. Categories decide which searches you appear in. Accurate hours decide whether a customer trusts the profile the next time.

Questions
What auto repair shops ask.
Should I add inspections to my profile?
If you are a licensed inspection station, yes, and say it plainly on your site too. Drivers search for inspections when the sticker is due or after a failure. Being findable for that search brings in new customers who may stay for repairs. If you do not inspect, say whether you fix cars that failed.
How do I handle a review that says I overcharged?
Reply calmly and specifically. Explain what was done, why, and that the customer approved it, without arguing or revealing private details. Invite them to call you directly. Future customers read your reply more closely than the complaint. A measured response shows you stand behind your work and treat people fairly.
Do dealer service departments outrank me?
Sometimes, for searches that include the brand name. For general repair searches, the map is where independents can compete, especially with strong reviews and a complete profile. You will not win every search. Focus on the services and towns where you want work, and make the profile excellent there.
