What I would build

For a mortgage brokerage.

01A mark that is not another house and key

Primary logo plus stacked and single-color versions, distinct from the roofline-and-key symbols so many mortgage companies use. Tested small for social profiles and email signatures.

02Colors that look steady

A palette with hex, RGB and CMYK values, chosen to feel stable and trustworthy without disappearing into the same bank blue every lender in the region already uses.

03Type with room for fine print

Typefaces chosen and licensed with legible small sizes, so disclosures and licensing lines stay readable on a business card, a yard sign rider or a social graphic.

04A rule sheet that includes compliance placement

One page showing where the NMLS ID, licensing lines and fair housing logo go on each format. Files organized and handed over, yours to keep.

The mortgage brokerage version

Why it matters.

A first-time buyer gets a broker's name from their realtor and looks them up. They find a website with a stock house photo, a generic key logo and a rate ticker. It looks like every online lead form they have been warned about. A clear, distinctive identity, used consistently on the website, the pre-approval letter and the closing gift, tells them this is a local professional, not a lead farm.

Mortgage branding also has to make room for what the rules require. Your NMLS ID, state licensing information and fair housing language need to fit on business cards, signs, social profiles and ads without looking like an afterthought. I build the system so those elements have a designated, legible place from the start.

The mistake I see

Designing a brand with no room for disclosures

Brokers get a beautiful logo and business card, then discover the required licensing information has to be crammed in later at an unreadable size. The fine print is part of the design, not a sticker slapped on top of it. I plan for it from the first sketch, so every piece looks finished and stays compliant.

How it goes

For a mortgage brokerage, step by step.

→ Keep scrolling. It moves sideways.

  1. Look at what exists

Your current marks, your competitors, and what your customers already associate with you.

  2. Direction, not options

Two directions, not eight. Eight is a way of making you do the deciding.

  3. Build the system

The mark, then everything that has to sit next to it.

  4. Hand it over

Organized files and a rule sheet. No hostage situation.

  5. Step five is you.

Questions

What mortgage brokers ask.

We operate under a larger company's license. Can we have our own brand?

That depends on the sponsoring company's rules and your state regulator's requirements for trade names. Plenty of branches and teams do have their own identity, but it has to be approved and properly disclosed. Ask your compliance contact first, then I build within whatever they allow.

Should our brand feature our face?

For a broker, often yes. Borrowers and realtors work with a person, not a logo. A professional photo on the website, the Google profile and the email signature makes you recognizable at an open house or a closing. The logo still matters, but your face carries much of the trust.

Do we need a brand refresh if we are moving to a new brokerage?

Usually at least an update, since licensing information and company affiliation change. It is a good moment to fix anything weak. I plan the rollout so realtor partners and past clients see the change clearly and do not lose track of where you went.
